Nissan Titan Crew Cab Truck Review

Truck Reviewer

Ten years ago the idea of anybody competing with the US makers’ full-size trucks would have been unthinkable. Then, eight years ago, along came the Nissan Titan Crew Cab and the market changed forever. Not only was it a valid challenger to the established brands, it was better in many areas. Times change of course, and the home-grown pickups soon fought back with higher standards and bigger capacities. However, the Nissan Titan Crew Cab remains a viable alternative. It is big, powerful truck, with capacities that are on a par with its rivals and some clever features. Standard bed length is five-and-a-half-feet (with a seven-foot version available), and most versions have 2 or 4-wheel drive. Your combination will effect your maximums but at the top of the scale you get a payload of a little over 2,000 pounds and trailering up to 9,400 pounds. It’s certainly no lightweight! Inside that bed you get the Utili-Trac cargo system with channels for heavy-duty cleats that make tying down odd shapes easier. There’s also a range of lockable boxes, dividers and extenders. There’s no doubt the Nissan Titan Crew Cab is built for the professional.

You do only get one engine size with the Nissan Titan Crew Cab, but at 5.6 liters the 32-valve V8 produces a more than adequate 317 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque. Flex Fuel (ethanol) is available, but not in all regions. Transmission is a 5-speed automatic unit and it has an additional tow/haul mode that holds low gears longer, for better acceleration up hill and better braking on steep downhills. For those who like to get off the beaten track there is a PRO-4X version with permanent 4-wheel drive, beefed up suspension, skid plates and an electronic locking rear differential. Those hoping to spend most of their time on nothing rougher than a construction site or open field can choose from S, SV and SL equipment levels. At the lower end of this selection you get the roomy cabin, with space for five adults and lots of extra storage areas, but not a great deal more. Invest a bit more in your Nissan Titan Crew Cab and you get 6-CD changer, multi-function driver info display and, at the top end, dual-zone climate control, power seats, leather and wood accents. Safety is coved by all kinds of air bags, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control plus hill start assist and descent control as an extra.

The Nissan Titan Crew Cab has been accused of being a little out of date. Initial reports suggested we would have a new model for 2011 but that has not appeared. In some ways the competition has overtaken the pickup that once set new heights itself. Not in all areas though, and not often as a total package. The Nissan Titan Crew Cab remains a strong proposition. A tough, hard working truck that provides great flexibility. That it’s also a good vehicle from a driving point of view is a bonus.
