Nissan Frontier King Cab Truck Review

Truck Reviewer

The Nissan Frontier King Cab is the “entry “level to compact Nissan truck ownership because there is no regular cab option. It has to be said that it’s a pretty high standard to start at. The manufacturer has considerable experience in this market and it shows. Capacities are up with anything in the field, levels of drivability are tremendous. There are flexible cargo handling options too. The Nissan Frontier King Cab is a well thought-out pickup and one that many people would be more than happy to own. Although it has handling that approaches sedan precision and ease, it’s as a workhorse that people will likely first look at this truck, so let’s start with those details. The chassis, a fully boxed, steel construction, is built for great rigidity. Likewise the suspension, which is leaf-spring rear and double wishbone front (part of what makes it steer so well). The box is a fraction over six feet long and, depending on specification, you can throw up to 1,565 pounds of just about anything you like in there. There’s a factory spray-in liner as standard (often an extra on rivals) so you won’t need to worry about a bit of dirt. Towing is substantial for its class, at 6,500 pounds.

So the Nissan Frontier King Cab will work hard. Will it move at a decent pace? The entry level motor is an economical 2.4 liter, 16-valve inline four that produces 171 lb-ft of torque.  It’s capable, and for many will be perfectly adequate, but if you see yourself really loading your pickup, or testing that trailering maximum on a regular basis, you’ll probably want to opt for the 4.0 liter V6 and its 281 lb-ft of torque. That will get the job done. Transmission depends on model, with 5 and 6-speed manual or 5-speed auto available. There are actually four models to choose from, the S and SV 4-cylinder, which are 2-wheel drive only, and the SV V6 and PRO-4X which are 2 or 4-wheel drive. The latter is an off-road special with things like skid plates, Bilstein shocks, electronic limited slip diff, BFGoodrich trail tires and a unique interior. Trim with the others varies from the basics of an AM/FM radio to a huge array of power, comfort and modern communication features. Safety is also important in the Nissan Frontier King Cab, with a full set of air bags, ABS and traction and stability control as standard. There are also hill start and hill descent controls available.

In a competitive market the Nissan Frontier King Cab does more than just punch its weight. It’s as good or better than anything it comes up against in almost every area. The Utili-Trac cargo system is very useful. It will haul with the best of them, is built to work for its living, yet is also a very good vehicle on the highway. You wouldn’t complain about taking it to the store, or across the state. The Nissan Frontier King Cab is an exceptional all-rounder.
