Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Truck Review

Truck Reviewer

Nissan have been importing their compact and mid-size trucks longer than any other foreign manufacturer. It’s clear from the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab that they know the market and they know what they are doing. No doubt about it, this is a very good example of this kind of pickup. Depending on how you put the package together it can be an economical working vehicle, a fun truck for bashing around the dunes or something that will do everything a family needs, driving them around safely and in considerable comfort. Before we get into detail on that though, we ought to look at it as most people probably will – first and foremost as a load lugger. On that score, the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is definitely built to do a job of work. It has a rigid, boxed steel chassis, double wishbone front suspension and strong, leaf-spring rear. You get two bed lengths, a half inch under five-feet as standard, or just over six feet as an option. Maximum carrying and trailering vary with model, with two or four-wheel drive and engine choice but you can throw a little short of 1500 lbs in the back and pull a healthy 6,300 lbs behind. That’s up with anything in its class.

To get that weight moving on down the road is a 24-vlave 4.0 liter V6 which generates 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. SOme people might be hoping for a V8, but the motor provided is modern, technologically advanced, and above all, up to the job. Transmissions are six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. There’s an increasing emphasis on safety with trucks like the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab these days, and a full set of front, side and head curtain air bags is standard. Keeping your fully-loaded pickup stable are ABS, traction and stability control, with hill start and hill descent controls available. When it comes to trim and what you get for your hard-earned money, things get interesting – and a little complicated. There are four levels, S, SV V6, PRO-4X and SL. The PRO-4X is a bit of a specialist, heavily targeted at off-roaders with things like Bilstein shocks, skid plates, etc. If that’s your thing you’’ll want to get more details from your dealer or online. For the “ordinary” Nissan Frontier Crew Cab models, fittings and features start from the workmanlike and built to high quality sedan standards. Top-end stereo with CD/MP3, satellite radio, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity all make an appearance.

There are other clever and useful items, like the flexible Utili-Trac cargo system and sliding bed extender. The general fit and feel, even on the base model, is upmarket. The cabin is comfortable, quiet, and the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab has excellent road manners. A properly pleasant vehicle to drive whether you are loaded for the construction site or loaded for a weekend’s camping. The competition certainly has a tough act to follow.
