GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Truck Review

Truck Reviewer

At the entry-level of big, tough, working trucks comes the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab. Except even at the bottom of the specification and extra charts, you still get quite a lot of truck. Sure it has lower trim levels than the extended and crew cab versions. First and foremost it’s built to carry and haul. However, this isn’t some rough and ready old steel box with suspension that will break your back and a cabin that will freeze you in winter and broil you in summer. The old image of the full-size pickup is well and truly a thing of the past with this vehicle. Of course how it will perform remains the most important aspect of the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab. It has a choice of box, 6-feet, 6-inches or eight feet, with two or four-wheel drive. Which of those you choose, and the engine, ultimately decides exactly what your maximums are, but at the top end you can load it up with over 1,900 lbs of gear and hitch 10,000 lbs to the back. With the rigid chassis and excellent suspension you’ll also find that empty or full, the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab is a really good truck to drive around.

You get a choice of three motors. At the bottom of the power scale is a 4.3 liter V6 which is economical, and probably adequate for some, but not going to pull maximum weight with the same ease as the alternates. Next up is a lively 4.8 liter V8 and finally there’s a 5.3 liter that certainly will pull, with output figures of 315 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. Both V8s have the added advantage that they will run on 85% ethanol. Transmission is 4-speed auto with overdrive and tow/haul mode. A six-speed is available. Safety is well taken care of. You get a stability and traction control system, ABS and tire pressure monitoring. Inside the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab cabin you have air bags front, side and head-curtain. There are two trim levels, Work Truck and SLE. While neither are packed with luxuries the general fit and quality inside the cab is of a remarkably high standard. At the base level you get manual air conditioning, four-speaker AM/FM radio and that’s about it. Dig a bit deeper into your bank balance and you’ll get CD/MP3 player, cruise control and 6 months of the multi-function OnStar safety, navigation and communication system.

Many of the features on other trim levels are available for the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab, but each is an extra cost. In reality, if you were looking at adding that many goodies you would probably be considering one of the more upscale cab layouts anyway. That’s not taking anything away from the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab, but that’s why GMC offer you the choice. At the budget end you don’t get a lot of frills but you do get one real hard working pickup. If that’s what you need, it’s a fine solution.
