GMC Savana Truck Review

The GMC Savana is a full sized passenger van that holds about twice the cargo of the average minivan or crossover SUV. Despite the current love affair the public has with SUVs and minivans there are times when nothing but the most accommodating will do. This is where the GMC Savana comes in. If it’s a larger than average family, a small business need, or a fleet vehicle there are needs that simply can’t be met with anything less than a full sized van.

The GMC Savana is reminiscent of the Chevrolet Express full sized van. Over the years very little has been done to change the dynamics of the Savana. While there have been upgrades from time to time the basic styling and functionality has not been altered.

The GMC Savana was called the Rally Wagon. The name was officially changed in the 90s and Savana became the utilitarian van for all with utilitarian needs. When purchasing a new van the buyer can customize the entire arrangement for their needs. This includes powertrain options, passenger arrangements, and even wheel base configurations. This gives the owner a chance to make it their very own serviceable van that will suit their transport needs completely.

Half ton and full ton configurations are available. With two trim levels the GMC Savana is really all about providing the most comfortable ride possible for as many as fifteen people. The lowest number of seats is eight. The model and configurations chosen will have an impact on how many passengers will be able to fit.

The base model comes with a 5.3 liter V8 engine. This is driven by a four speed automatic transmission. The 2500 GMC Savana offers a 4.8 or a 6.0 liter engine. Each of these V8s come with a six speed automatic transmission. You have to go all the way up to the 3500 model in order to have the option of a turbodiesel V8 with a six speed automatic transmission.

When you climb in it is obvious that aesthetics were not the chief concern during the design process. The interior of all trims and models is designed to be functional rather than overly decorative. Driver controls are intuitive and well spaced. Each control is easy to reach and ergonomically appropriate. Other than lacking beauty, the main complaint regarding the interior space is the lack of foot room in the wells.

The GMC Savana is well designed for ample passenger and cargo room. In order to have better access to the rear of the van there are door configurations that can be helpful. You can add a sliding door for the passengers or you can add a rear door with a 40/60 split that can offer straight into the rear access. Each configuration works well but is highly recommended that you choose one. Otherwise the access to the back of the van becomes highly difficult.

The single generation GMC Savana is a consistently high quality van that has been around for decades. New or used it can be used for a wide variety of purposes including business and professional transport needs.
