Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab Truck Review
Truck Reviewer
If you are looking for a full-size all-rounder with an impeccable heritage, the Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab has got to be near the top of your list. With almost thirty years of continuous development behind it, you would certainly expect most of the wrinkles to be ironed out by now! Its continuing position at the very top of the sales charts, year after year, would suggest that was true. Although it must be considered the entry-level of Ford heavy-duty truck ownership, it is nevertheless an outstanding vehicle and definitely no poor relation. “Built Ford Tough” is the slogan, and from the thick C-channel chassis – which is cross braced, riveted and welded – to the suspension and steering components, it has been put together to do hard work all day, every day. That’s not to say it’s all raw, brute strength. Even in the quite basic trim levels of the Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab, the driver and passenger have not been forgotten. It’s a cab that is surprisingly quiet, with supportive seating and good general ergonomics. Controls are chunky enough for a gloved hand and well laid out.
If you are interested in this kind of truck then capacities are important, so let’s look at those. There is just one bed for the Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab, at eight feet long. An additional useful feature is an extender which means you can add to that by running with the tailgate down – making sure you load safely, of course. So what about pounds and ounces? As usual, that depends on exact configuration, fifth wheel towing, etc., but maximums are over 4,000 lbs for the bed and 16,500 trailered. Getting all of that on the move is handled by a choice of two engines, both with a six-speed auto box. The standard 6.2 liter gasoline V8 isn’t what you would call puny, but the optional 6.7 liter turbo-diesel V8 is the one that will really haul. 400 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque is some serious performance. The other side of a potent equation like that has to be safety. Even at the bottom of the specification options, that’s a priority. Both the XL and XLT (the two Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab trims available) have the Safety Canopy System, which is air bags all round. There are anti-lock disk brakes on all wheels, roll stability control and tire pressure monitors.
We haven’t said much about gadgets and goodies because frankly there aren’t many. There’s manual air conditioning, AM/FM radio and auxiliary power point in the XT, add cruise control and power windows in the XLT. There’s plenty of other stuff available but you’ll need more cash. The Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab isn’t trying to be a luxury limo though. It’s an extremely capable, large pickup. It’s solidly built and more comfortable and better to drive than you might expect. When you need to work for a living it makes an excellent partner.
