Ford F-150 Regular Cab Truck Review
Truck Reviewer
Being the best selling vehicle in the USA for nearly thirty years must mean you’re doing something right. The F-150 is not just best selling truck, it’s top dog over everything. Within the line-up, the Ford F-150 Regular Cab is the most popular model – so you’ve got to be expecting one very good full-size, half-ton pickup. You won’t be disappointed. This isn’t some johnny-come-lately, all flash new ideas, this is the culmination of three decades of considered development. It’s the result of looking at what the opposition is doing and trying to do it better. Of listening to customers, then giving them what they want. So what you get is a truck built to do a tough days work, of course, but you also get well though-out features like the deployable step for easy bed access and the extra containment fence so you can extend the load space by leaving the tailgate down. Although the base level XL is definitely in the workhorse category, with little in the way of extras, the cabin is still a comfortable place to be. It’s quiet too – even when you’re pushing on – which is something the Ford F-150 Regular Cab is quite capable of doing.
Engines have recently been upgraded and all have six-speed auto boxes. There’s a 3.5 liter V6 Ecoboost twin-turbo motor which is remarkably strong given its capacity – maximum torque is a healthy 420 lb-ft. There is a conventional 3.7 liter V6, and then a 5.0 liter V8 completes the set. Two or four-wheel drive is available for all three trim levels: XL, STX and XLT. For bed length you have either six-feet, six-inches or eight-feet. Load and trailering capacities are always going to be important and the Ford F-150 Regular Cab claims class-leading figures. With the number of options available depending on bed, motor and other equipment, it’s always difficult to compare rivals directly, but maximums for this pickup are certainly more than adequate at over 3,000 pounds load and 11,300 pounds towing. Safety is, quite rightly, a strong selling point these days and front and side-curtain airbags, stability and trailer sway control, traction control and anti-lock brakes are all standard across the range. As for the remainder of the cabin features, you’re not going to be overwhelmed by luxury. The Ford F-150 Regular Cab is always seen as the entry-level so you get AM/FM radio but you have to reach into your pocket a bit more for CD player., etc.
To be fair, many of the standard features of the upscale models can be added if you need them – but then you might be better served going for a larger cab. There are a huge number of potential options if the Ford F-150 Regular Cab doesn’t quite fulfill your needs. Having said that, if what you need is a tough but comfortable hard-working pickup, you’ll go a long way to find one that beats it. The Ford F-150 Regular Cab didn’t get to be a nation’s favorite by accident!
