Ford E-Series Van Truck Review

Truck Reviewer

The Ford E Series van, also known as the Econoline Wagon, has been the same basic vehicle since 1997. With only minor change here and there the E Series has been a classic large transport vehicle for decades. In 2008 a new grille was added and changes were made to the steering, braking system, and suspension. These would be the first mechanical improvements in eleven years. Critics have stated that the changes are an essential part of maintaining its place in the industry while other critics claim that the consistency of quality is something that consumers can rely upon.

Without many improvements the Ford E Series van has been surpassed by some of the competitors who set out to make a van more than a utilitarian vehicle. Yet, with its low price and the understanding of consistent quality consumers are still purchasing the van as a carry everything-do all type of vehicle.

The Ford E Series van offers moderate performance. Handling is reasonable on the road although it is far from stellar. It’s comfortable for the passengers as well as for the driver. The Ford reputation for providing reliable vehicles for a reasonable price has certainly been lived up to if not exceeded when it comes to the van.

When selecting a Ford E Series van there are three basic seating configurations to choose from. You can opt for the eight passenger, the middle of the road twelve passenger, or the full fifteen passenger seating arrangement. The base model will give you the very basics of a comfortable van. With air conditioning, a mounted AM/FM stereo, and vinyl seating you are getting literally the bare bones model. Stepping up in trim level will give you a few more standard features.

The Ford E Series van gives you the choice between double swinging doors for side entry or a sliding door like you would find on a minivan. Regardless of which door you choose the cost of the vehicle stays the same. At this time dual sliding doors are not an option. The single sliding door makes access to the rear of the van easier.

While the Ford E Series van provides quality and reliability the lack of design changes means that there are other vans that are more responsive on the road, have better equipment, and are preferred for comfort and style. With three engine options, you may or may not find that the Ford vans offer enough power even given its lower price range.

For those who are looking just for the basic Ford E Series van the base engine is a 4.6 liter V8 which provides 225 horsepower. A 5.4 liter V8 steps up the horsepower to 255. Those who opt for the E-350 Super Duty can rely on the 6.8 liter V10 which provides 305 horsepower. A four speed automatic drives the first two engine sizes and a five speed automatic drives the V10. Without compromising on basic reliability and quality but offering little in the way of overhaul or improvements the E Series sits in the middle of the pack when compared to other similar vehicles on the road. As a utilitarian vehicle you can find yourself with a workhorse van that can be purchased for bargain prices.
