Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab Truck Review

Truck Reviewer

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab might be seen as the out-and-out workhorse of the heavy duty Chevy pickup range, but it’s not just some big truck only fit for a tough day at the building site. There’s no denying that’s a role it performs particularly well, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. It doesn’t tell you how smart it looks, or how superbly it drives. When you look at being able to throw over 3,700 pounds of whatever you like in the big load bed, or tow an incredible 17,800 lbs with the optional turbo-diesel motor, you might miss the fact that it has near sedan-style handling and acceleration that would leave many a family compact in its dust. Sure, it’s a hugely capable working vehicle, but it is also a positive pleasure to get around in. It’ll happily take you out on the prairie or up a mountain, but it can also take you on long freeway trips in considerable comfort. From the incredibly strong box steel chassis, to the powerful motors, it’s built for the roughest challenges. That doesn’t mean it’s unrefined. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab is one thoroughly modern truck.

Actually the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab is several trucks, as you can have two or four-wheel drive and two different trim levels. All choices share the same bed which, at over 8 feet, gives you plenty of load flexibility. The standard motor is a potent 6.0 liter gas-fueled unit but the real star is the alternative 6.6 liter Duramax turbo-diesel. It puts out almost 400 horsepower and an enormous 765 lb-ft of torque. That’s not just stump-pulling, that’s whole trees! Both engines are connected up via six-speed auto transmissions. Keeping it all nice and smooth are sound and vibration-deadening mounts for engine and cab. Sharp steering is power assisted and owes a lot of its precision to independent front suspension and massive leaf-springs at the rear that mean empty or full it inspires confidence and drives much smaller than it really is. As for inside the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab, well to be honest it isn’t luxury, but it’s more than adequate. In the base model WT you get a decent AM/FM stereo (a CD player is an option), cruise control and all the safety features you would expect like air bags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, etc. In the upscale LT you get things like better seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, but mostly it’s useful basics not bells and whistles.

But then the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab isn’t about toys and gadgets. It’s about strength, reliability, towering competence. It will carry more, tow more, work harder for longer at yet it’s more economical than before. It will do whatever you intend it for extremely well and, as a bonus, it’s a delight to drive. We doubt those who own a Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab will be looking for anything else for a long, long time.
