Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Truck Review
Truck Reviewer
I read an article recently that said nobody buys one of these compact pickups for pleasure. It struck me as a bit odd. Although the Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab is certainly a superb and willing workhorse, I wondered why someone wouldn’t throw a bunch of gear inside and head for the hills on a weekend – or the desert, or whatever? Surely anyone who couldn’t have fun with a tough, capable truck like this simply doesn’t have a lot of imagination! It may not be an exotic European sports car, but the Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab will comfortably handle every job expected of it, in all conditions, and reward you with the kind of value for money performance that has almost been forgotten. On the outside it’s not just a styling exercise that follows fashion at the expense of functionality. That’s not to say it isn’t good looking – it has that rugged, purposeful appeal that has evolved over the years. It looks like it’s up to the task, and it is. Inside the cab it has everything you need, all fit for purpose, plus more than a few standard features that you might expect to cost extra – but don’t. There’s plenty of choice across the range, in both trim levels and power output.
The Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab gets you where you need to go courtesy of either two or four-wheel drive and three fuel injected engines ranging from the efficient 2.9 liter inline four, through a vigorous 3.7 liter five cylinder to the potent 5.3 liter V8. Depending on the model you get either 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto transmission (both with overdrive), torsion bar suspension up front and 2-stage multi-leaf on the rear. There are additional suspension options to cater for more serious off-road work, or alternatively to give a more sporting and responsive feel on the tarmac. With the Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab you also get four trim levels from WT to 3LT. Even the base model has extensive safety features like ABS, air bags, tire pressure monitors, traction and stability control plus Onstar safety, security and navigation system as standard equipment. In the cab there is AM/FM stereo (a CD player is an option), climate control, power steering, Bluetooth connectivity and . Even at the budget end it isn’t under specified. If you’ve got slightly deeper pockets there are alloy and chrome wheel options, satellite radio, sunroof and numerous other upgrades.
People buy the Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab because it invariably delivers on its promises. You can throw over 1,400 pounds of pretty much whatever you like in the back and it will barely notice the difference. Yes, it’s predictable. Yes, it’s a hard working truck. That’s precisely what you choose a small pickup like this for. That doesn’t mean it has to be dull. Each of the Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab models is well equipped as standard and one of them probably meets your needs without even going for the options. Dare we say it, it can even be entertaining and fun!
